RITCHIE BLACKMORE CONFESSES THAT HE “IS A LITTLE BIT OF A MUSICAL SNOB” AND LOVES RENAISSANCE MUSIC

Only one movie that we saw, Elizabeth, included three authentic Renaissance songs performed correctly on authentic instruments.
Ritchie Blackmore is a Renaissance guy, at least in the musical sense of the term. He is the co-founder and former guitarist of the iconic metal band Deep Purple.

In Blackmore’s Night, a traditional folk rock band he founded with his wife and vocalist Candice Night, Blackmore has been exploring his love of Renaissance music since leaving Deep Purple.

In a recent interview with Long Island Weekly, the duo was asked if they could envision their music being used in any of the current popular fantasy series, like House of the Dragon and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

It’s intriguing because there are so many historical pieces on television and in movies that succeed commercially, Night said. Ironically, one of our songs was only ever included in a Jim Carrey film called Yes Man, where it was played at a party he attended.

“It’s odd, since I don’t follow that type of thing,” Blackmore said. Being a purist, I prefer to hear music from the 1500s or 1600s while I’m alone in a forest.

He admitted, “I’m a little bit of a musical snob.”

“The only movie we watched that included three authentic Renaissance songs performed properly on authentic instruments was Elizabeth. I know that both Candy and I were bouncing around in our chairs.

“I was happy that they had seized the opportunity to perform it as it was intended to be performed. However, it’s quite uncommon to hear these tunes or melodies performed correctly.
