Princess Leia buns get a modern update from Rihanna at the Golden Globes.

At the Golden Globes on January 10, Rihanna wore an outfit that was a work of art from head to toe. The multihyphenate celebrity made a surprise appearance at the awards ceremony wearing a spectacular Schiaparelli gown with puffy sleeves and an updo to match. She described the two structured buns that hairstylist Yusef Williams created for her as “Princess-Leia-meets-Hollywood-meets-Wakanda,” he told Vogue.

Williams maintained the desired shape of the two braids by weaving wires through them, and then she placed twisted hair on top of each braid to give it a flawless finish. “When she first said, “OK, I don’t want to look like Princess Leia,” we said, “But what’s wrong with Princess Leia? She was quite fierce,” “said he. The concluding step? In the style of the late Hollywood legend Josephine Baker, a thin strip of bangs was curled into a C shape. This award season, it wouldn’t surprise us if this hairdo became popular.

Rihanna, whose song “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” was nominated for the Golden Globe for best original song, kept the rest of her Golden Globes beauty look understated. The new mother’s glowing makeup was created by Priscilla Ono and Yvette Evora using only Fenty Beauty products, including light pink eyeshadow, blush around her cheekbones, and rosy lip gloss.

Natasha Lyonne’s edgy “jellyfish” ponytail, Emma D’Arcy’s new midnight-blue hair colour, and the several “balletcore” buns sported by celebrities like Li Jun Li, Bailey Bass, and Kaley Cuoco were among the night’s other notable beauty highlights.
